Special Levels of Earthly Hell
An Atheist's Experience with Demonic Possession
by Merry Freer

Genre: Paranormal, Occult, Horror, True crime
Number of pages: 244
Cover Artist: Kalen O’Donnell
Drew Collins is an atheist who experiences the world in black and white. As an educated man of science, he rejects belief in the paranormal and the existence of demons. Until an energy he calls "The Beast" takes possession of his wife.

What he witnesses at night in his own bedroom cannot be reconciled with science. And yet he sees it with his own eyes, feels its presence, ominous and evil, with his entire being.

Against every instinct, Drew reaches out for help. It is not just his marriage that’s at stake. The evil force has permeated his wife's family, tearing them apart and culminating in bloodshed and murder. Drew must face a stark choice: sacrifice his beliefs and fight an entity he doesn’t understand and is reluctant to label, or abandon his wife and her family.

Q & A with Merry Freer

1. Tell us a little bit about your main characters.
It is an ensemble cast with Drew and Adriana Collins as the leads. Drew is an aetheist/scientist and Adriana is an out-of-place immigrant, having left a peach government job in central Mexico to marry Drew and follow him to the United States. Adriana’s sisters and their children follow her lead and play leading roles. Oh, and then there’s the demon that possesses Adriana.

2. Describe your ideal writing spot.
I’m a creature of habit. I like to sit at my PC and write at my desk (after having done my plotting and planning while driving in the car).

3. Who designed the covers for your book and what was that process like for you as the author?
The idea for my cover came from my main character, Drew, who is a real person (different name). There are several events in the book where a bloody eye is seen in a broken mirror. “Drew” kept sending me e-mail pics of bloody eyes as he found images that looked closer and closer to the one he saw. Once I had the concept, cover artist Kalen O’Donnell did the graphics,

4. What is the best advice you have been given?

It’s the old adage – write what you know. It keeps one out of so much trouble.

5. How do you keep busy when you're not writing?
I enjoy hiking and reading and spending time with my family. I have a 12-year-old granddaughter who is my favorite companion.

6. If you could have any superhuman ability, what would you choose and why?
No contest. I would choose to be invisible. As a journalist, I am nosy and want to have answers for everything (even things that aren’t my business). I would be able to get the real scoop on all of those pesky questions that nag at me.

7. Which do you prefer: hard/paperbacks or ebooks?

E-books – just because they’re more comfortable to use.

8. What book are you reading now?
“The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle
